Taptu

Taptu was a technology company specializing in mobile search and social media aggregation, founded in Cambridge, England, in 2007. The firm was established to address the challenge of information overload on mobile devices by developing platforms that consolidated content for touchscreen users. Taptu was privately held and received funding from notable venture capital firms DFJ Esprit and Sofinnova. The company's primary offering evolved into "My Taptu," a social news aggregator application available for iOS, Android, and other mobile platforms. The app allowed users to combine feeds from news websites, blogs, and social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn into personalized, manageable streams. This functionality was marketed as letting consumers "DJ their news" by mixing various sources and topics into tailored content playlists. The platform aimed to reduce "app hopping" by creating a single destination for a user's interests. In addition to its consumer-facing app, Taptu's publishing platform, Tapform, was utilized by international publications such as The Guardian Environment. In September 2012, Taptu was acquired by Mediafed, a global leader in RSS news feed monetization, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was intended to merge Mediafed's monetization platform with Taptu's mobile technology to create a comprehensive digital publishing service. Despite the acquisition and initial success, the Taptu service was officially shut down on March 31, 2015. This was approximately a year before its parent company, Mediafed, also went into administration.
