Quantum-dot DWDM comb lasers and optical interconnects for AI datacenters MoreLess
Quintessent is a Santa Barbara, California semiconductor company developing low-cost, resilient optical interconnect products for AI datacenters. Its first product is a single-chip quantum-dot DWDM comb laser that generates eight precisely spaced wavelengths from one laser with a single bias control, removing the need for banks of individually tuned lasers, high-power pump lasers or complex wavelength-control electronics. Built on gallium arsenide O-band quantum-dot gain material heterogeneously integrated on standard silicon photonics, the design avoids the capacity-constrained indium phosphide laser supply chain, supports wafer-scale manufacturing and, according to the company, can enable up to 40% lower data-movement power than narrow-and-fast architectures for wide-and-parallel optical scale-up networks. Quintessent demonstrated the technology at OFC 2026 and began customer sampling of an evaluation kit in August 2026. Co-founder and CEO Alan Liu leads the company. On 24 August 2026 Quintessent announced an oversubscribed $40 million Series A led by Cycle Capital, with new investors Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Hina Liberty Capital, Susquehanna International Group, InterVest, Safar Partners and Ciena and existing investors 11.2 Capital, Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Osage University Partners and Sierra Ventures, to mature and qualify the comb laser, ramp manufacturing and develop semiconductor optical amplifiers and an optical engine.
