Jazztel

Telecom · Madrid, Spain · Founded 1998

Leading Spanish telecommunications company offering telephone, Internet and TV services MoreLess

Jazztel PLC operates as a telecommunications brand in Spain, currently under the ownership of Orange España. The company provides a suite of services including fixed-line telephone, mobile services, high-speed fiber internet, and television for both residential and business clients. Its business model focuses on offering bundled packages of these services, often at competitive price points, to attract and retain a broad customer base. Revenue is generated through monthly subscriptions to its convergent fiber, mobile, and TV plans.

The company was founded in Madrid in 1997 as Jazz Telecom S.A. by Argentine entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky. Varsavsky, who studied economics, philosophy, and international relations at universities in New York and Columbia, identified a lack of real competition in the Spanish telecommunications market. His vision was to establish Jazztel as an independent operator with its own network infrastructure, rather than a virtual operator renting capacity from the incumbent, Telefónica. In 1999, Jazztel launched its internet subsidiary, Jazztel Internet Factory (JIF), which created the portal Ya.com, quickly becoming the second-largest in Spain before being sold to Deutsche Telekom in 2000. Facing financial difficulties after the dot-com bubble burst, Varsavsky resigned in 2002. The company underwent a significant turnaround after 2004, when Leopoldo Fernández Pujals became the majority shareholder and implemented a new business plan focused on growth and profitability.

A significant milestone in Jazztel's history was its entry into the IBEX 35, Spain's benchmark stock market index, on April 9, 2013. In 2014, French telecommunications group Orange S.A. announced a public tender offer to acquire 100% of Jazztel for €3.4 billion. The acquisition was successfully completed in 2015, and by February 2016, Jazztel was fully merged into Orange Espagne, S.A.U., ceasing to exist as a separate legal entity but remaining a key commercial brand for the group. This strategic move created Spain's second-largest fixed-line broadband operator and a major player in the mobile segment. As part of the regulatory approval, Orange agreed to divest a portion of Jazztel's fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, which was subsequently sold to MásMóvil. Jazztel's product portfolio includes fiber optic internet with symmetric speeds up to 1 Gbps, various mobile data plans with features like data sharing and rollover, and Jazztel TV, which provides access to a wide range of channels and on-demand content, including services like Netflix.
