Semiconductor manufacturing for feature-rich, high-performance applications MoreLess
In a world powered by chips, not all semiconductors are created equal. While some companies chase the absolute cutting edge, another kind of player is essential—the one that builds the feature-rich, reliable chips for everything from cars to connected devices. That’s the playground of GlobalFoundries, a manufacturing giant born from a strategic pivot. The story begins in 2009, not in a garage, but as a massive spinoff. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), in a move to become a "fabless" design company, spun off its manufacturing division. This new entity, temporarily called 'The Foundry Company', was established through a joint venture between AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi, a sovereign wealth fund now known as Mubadala. The founding team consisted of experienced engineers and executives who transitioned from AMD's manufacturing arm, bringing deep industry knowledge from day one. With an initial investment ranging from $4 to $6 billion from ATIC, GlobalFoundries hit the ground running. Its mission was to serve a broad customer base, and it expanded rapidly. A key early move was the 2010 acquisition of Chartered Semiconductor, which significantly grew its global footprint and customer list. Another pivotal moment came in 2015 with the acquisition of IBM's microelectronics business, which enhanced its portfolio with specialized technologies. By 2012, AMD had divested its final stake, leaving the foundry wholly owned by its Abu Dhabi investors. A defining strategic shift occurred in 2018 when the company, then led by CEO Tom Caulfield, decided to halt the costly development of the most advanced 7nm chips. Instead, GlobalFoundries chose to focus on becoming a leader in specialized, feature-rich technologies for high-growth markets like automotive, IoT, and 5G communications. This pivot proved crucial, positioning the company as a critical supplier with a resilient and geographically diverse manufacturing footprint across the U.S., Europe, and Singapore. GlobalFoundries went public in October 2021, raising nearly $2.6 billion in its IPO. Today, the company stands as the world's third-largest semiconductor foundry by revenue, thriving not by chasing Moore's Law to its extreme, but by expertly manufacturing the essential chips that power our everyday lives.
