Intelligent power management for electrification and digitalization. MoreLess
In a world increasingly dependent on electricity, Eaton is a company that matters. It’s an intelligent power management company, making essential products for data centers, utilities, and even the aerospace industry. But its journey didn't start with electrons; it started with the automobile. The story begins in 1911 in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Joseph Oriel Eaton, a businessman, partnered with engineer Viggo V. Torbensen and his brother-in-law, Henning O. Taube. Torbensen had patented an innovative internal-gear truck axle, and together they founded the Torbensen Gear and Axle Company to manufacture it, starting with just seven hand-built axles in their first year. The company's early years saw rapid change. After moving to Cleveland in 1915 to be closer to the auto industry, the company was acquired by its largest customer, only for Joseph Eaton to leave, start a new axle company, and then buy back his original business in 1922. Rechristened the Eaton Axle and Spring Company in 1923, it went public and began an aggressive acquisition strategy, diversifying into various auto components. This pattern of growth through acquisition defined Eaton for decades. Key milestones included the 1963 merger with Yale & Towne, a lock and materials handling manufacturer, and the pivotal 1978 acquisition of Cutler-Hammer, which significantly expanded its electrical business. However, the most transformative shift came with the acquisition of the Westinghouse Distribution and Controls Business in 1994, solidifying its move toward power management. This strategic pivot culminated in the 2012 acquisition of Cooper Industries, establishing Eaton as a global power management leader. Today, Eaton has largely shed its automotive roots to focus on its electrical and aerospace businesses. With its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, and administrative center in Ohio, the company continues to grow through strategic acquisitions, positioning itself at the heart of the world's accelerating electrification.
